New Ribeira Market

Situation

Located in the Ría de Arousa, the largest in Galicia, we find this fishing port. Large quantities of fish arrive daily from coastal boats, making it one of the most important in Europe.

For inshore fishing or coastal fishing, small boats are used that usually go a short distance from the coast.

Because fishing is usually carried out over the course of a day, more artisanal techniques are usually used.

The most common being the "cerco", "palangre", "arrastre" and "trasmallo".

NUEVA LONJA DE RIBEIRA

Auction

Due to the characteristics of inshore fishing, the product arrives fresh at the port, once unloaded from the boat, it goes directly to one of the auction rooms where it is purchased by wholesalers for processing and subsequent shipment to their customers.

Some fish are sold in batches, in boxes or individually, depending on the species being marketed.

Each species that is marketed has an identification label with its corresponding commercial name, its scientific name, the capture area, the type of gear used for its fishing and the boat information.

This label also informs about the weight of the lot, the box or the product.

The Fishing Port

As the afternoon progresses, the boats arrive and the pace becomes increasingly frenetic.

The fish goes directly from the boats to the market.

The activity continues well into the early hours of the morning.
