Engraulis encrasicolus

Boquerón, aladroque, bocarte is the name by which this blue fish of about 15-20cm is known. with a high commercial value for human consumption mainly. On the Cantabrian coast it is also known as anchovy.

The bocarte abounds throughout the year throughout the Mediterranean Sea, from South Africa to southern Norway, it is also present in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

We find this fish in surface waters (where it feeds) up to a depth of 100 m. forming large schools since it is a very sociable fish.

Their diet consists of plankton, larvae or small mollusks.

 

 

Bocarte

Lighted seine nets and hoisted nets are used to capture them.

The bocarte or anchovy is a fish highly appreciated in all the countries of the Mediterranean region for its flavor.

It is usually consumed fried, salted, packed in olive oil, what is called "anchovy", pickled in vinegar, commonly known as anchovy.
