The bogue is a fusiform and elongated fish, the usual size is usually 15-20 cm. although males can reach 36 cm in total length.

It lives in all types of substrates up to 250 m. deep, despite this it is more abundant in the first 100 m.

The bogue is a gregarious fish that forms numerous schools. It is omnivorous, feeding on small crustaceans and plankton.
