MERLUCCIUS MERLUCCIUS

The European hake is a white fish that lives in salt water, its size ranges from 80 to 130cm. The largest specimens can reach a weight of 10kg.

Its habitat is usually at an average depth of 200 meters, where the water temperature is usually about 5ºC.

It is distributed along the coasts of almost all of Europe and North Africa, and is a very abundant fish.

It usually feeds on smaller fish (anchovies, other hake, etc.), squid and zooplankton.

The fishing gear used to capture them are longlines (skewer hake), gillnets (volanta) or trawls.

Of them, the most appreciated is the skewer hake, in addition to being the one with the highest value in the market.

Although it is a very abundant species that we can easily find in all markets, it is highly appreciated in Spanish cuisine since it is one of the most used fish in it (6kg/person/year).
